Fresh blackberries for snacking.

Our sweet blackberries can be eaten right away without waiting long, because they are so fresh and natural that they don’t even need to be washed beforehand.

Love at first bite.

“The way to someone’s heart is through his stomach” says picker Elena Vega with a smile, tasting a sweet blackberry. She likes to snack on the sweet berries while she works, which she calls product control with a wink.

Sweet, juicy, complex in flavor – the berries here look tempting, but harvesting them is not easy. You have to stretch yourself sometimes to get to the beautiful ones. “But what wouldn’t you do for the love of your life”? she laughs.

Only in the warmest and sunniest regions of the earth grow for us the largest, sweetest and juiciest berries. Blackberries like sunny to semi-shady locations and soils rich in lime and nitrogen.

In Germany, Spain and Italy, these deep blue beauties thrive and are always picked at the optimal time of harvest.

And so Elena can be seen snacking on a berry or two. “When the dew is still on the fruit, they are especially refreshing”. With the utmost care, the team pick the fruit and gently place it in its packaging. “It’s just a wonderfully versatile and uniquely great fruit”, Elena knows, and continues to snack. Because that’s the thing about love – you never get enough of it.

Our blackberries

Good to know

To keep the berries plump, they should be stored in a cool place. But they taste best when you eat them right away.

about blackberries

Country of origin

To ensure that we at SanLucar can offer delicious blackberries all year round, ours come for example from Germany, Italy, Spain and in the European winter season also from Chile.

Storage

Blackberries are very sensitive and can quickly go moldy due to bruising during transport or humidity in the refrigerator. Therefore, it is best to eat them quickly or store them covered for a maximum of two days in the coldest place in the refrigerator. They always taste best at room temperature and last only a few hours here.

Tips and special features

Botanically, blackberries are aggregate fruits, by which is meant, however, that they consist of many small, closely connected drupes sitting on the cone-shaped fruit base. The leaves of the plant were a popular remedy in earlier centuries as a tea, and in some regions the fully ripe fruits are used to make a delectable dark blackberry wine.

History

The original home of blackberries is in the vast forests of North America and Eurasia. Even in ancient times, the blackberry was considered a medicinal plant. Today in Europe there are about 2000 varieties of blackberries.
