Nature tastes good too.
Every spring, the apricot trees of the Poveda family in Murcia, southern Spain, receive visitors. Thousands of the welcome guests cavort between the rows of trees. The industrious helpers are from a neighboring beekeeper who brings his hives over every year.
But they are not the only ones who lend a hand to the family’s cultivation. »The sun is by far the most important employee here, because it ensures that our fruit becomes particularly sweet«, explains master grower Juan Poveda.
With economical drip irrigation, water reaches the roots of the trees directly through hoses, so not a drop is wasted. “When you spend your life with and in nature, as we do, responsible stewardship of resources and the land is a given”, the Povedas say. “When the last apricot is picked, we always feel a bit wistful,” Juan laughs. “But then we also look forward again to the next spring and the bees’ visit”.
