What would the summer be without raspberries? To tell you the truth, we can’t even imagine that here at SanLucar. And since delicious fruits are our specialty, we have set up test fields in Huelva, Spain, where we’re experimenting with various new varieties.
At the beginning of March, our quality expert Wifi and his colleague Elli (with a matching raspberry-coloured T-shirt) were there and examined the berries in an intermediate check. Because on the one hand, of course, their flavour must be sensational, at the same time we have to find out how the plants act and react. They checked whether they like the climate here, how much nutrients and water they need, whether they are productive enough and whether the fruits obtain a decent size. Such tests can sometimes take a few years, because a lot of tests must be passed before a raspberry is allowed to become a SanLucar Raspberry. Or as Wifi likes to say: “A SanLucar Scrumptious-Berry.
